<image:caption>We decided the best way to make a real impact was to work holistically exploring the central issues of teenage pregnancy and sexual health (including addressing safe sex and STIs) but also cover related issues such as respectful relationships, peer pressure, drugs and alcohol affecting decision-making, accessing advice and support, as well as aspirations and planning for a successful future.</image:caption>

<image:title>Spread The Word - Putting creativity to work</image:title>
<image:caption>We decided to run week-long workshop schemes in each of the areas with the highest teenage pregnancy rates. The project would use an exciting mix of media, theatre, and marketing to get participants (aged between 14 and 19) to initially learn about the issues and then create their own ad campaigns telling other young people why it’s wisest not to engage in risky or unsafe sex.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Make Your Mark (MYM) targets young people facing financial and educational disadvantage, engaging those who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) or those ‘at risk’ of becoming NEET.  The programme is aimed at the most marginalised young people at a pivotal point in their lives, a crucial moment where they most need to be nurtured and motivated to believe in their own potential. Young people are referred to MYM by our wide range of  partner organisations; schools, colleges, specialist education units, youth workers, social services, the youth offending team and other youth charities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Make Your Mark - How does it work?</image:title>
<image:caption>MYM is delivered to participants free-of-charge, in accessible community venues. The programme consists of an initial intensive week of delivery, followed up by one-to-one and group mentoring. Our team of specialist practitioners provide a fun, structured, interactive drama and media-based training programme featuring a blend of group drama sessions, mock interviews, teamwork challenges and practical employability skills training sessions. </image:caption>

<image:caption>Following the initial delivery participants are mentored on their individual needs, enabling us to get to the root cause of their challenges and find solutions to overcome them.  We refer them to further relevant services to continue adding to their skill base and we offer them practical ongoing support to help them to succeed in education, employment and/or training.   </image:caption>

      <image:title>Commercial Theatre - Pretty Please | All seats in a size 8</image:title>
<image:caption>This scandalously irreverent and fabulously entertaining musical romp combines hilarious original songs (including “Fit Your Corpse Into A Size Eight Coffin” and “The Mung Bean Rhumba”) with intimate character portrayals to explore our powerful desire for physical perfection and the ugly excesses of the beauty business. Pretty Please premiered at The Greenwich Playhouse and received rave reviews from audiences and press – it was hailed by The Stage as having all the ingredients of a 'cult classic': “Pretty Please is easily one of the funniest, fluffiest concoctions to appear in a long time on the fringe. Writer Peter Tennant has lovingly crafted a hysterical, tawdry tale and thanks to brilliantly comic performances, the whole is reminiscent of the League of Gentlemen with lip gloss... It is Tennant's book and the aching sincerity of the performances that really make this a great show with all the ingredients of a cult classic.” – The Stage</image:caption>

<image:title>Commercial Theatre - Everyone Loves Me | Is fame the new religion?</image:title>
<image:caption>This hilarious contemporary musical comedy exposes the car-crash world of celebrity; where wannabes and has-beens trample each other in a desperate bid to cling to fame - the life-affirming drug that fills the hollow in all of them… Everyone Loves Me was a huge hit, and after a successful run in London and at the Edinburgh Festival, it went on to secure the Best Musical Award in the Fringe Report Awards. Following the success in Edinburgh, Mercury Musicals showcased Everyone Loves Me in the West End. ‘’Magnificent, funny, and brilliant entertainment that grips and delights from start to finish and has a sell-out “Shaftesbury Avenue” feel” – John Park, Editor, Fringe Report ‘’Excellent vocals, flawless choreography and sharp costume choices make this a musical to remember. 5 stars.’’ – Fiona O’Hanlon, Edinburgh Guide</image:caption>

<image:title>Case Study - Chain Reaction Youth Theatre - Case Study | Max, 12</image:title>
<image:caption>Max has been attending Chain Reaction Youth Theatre (CRYT) for 18 months and is a valued and enthusiastic member. When we first met Max, he was extremely shy and found it difficult to speak in group situations. He would usually maintain closed body language, holding his head down and wouldn’t openly volunteer his opinion or perform in front of others. After working with Max for a sustained amount of time, we noticed a drastic change in his behaviour, attitude and outlook. He started talking to others, being more open and demonstrated a desire to engage in activities. Watching Max open up showed how the support of our facilitators at CRYT had encouraged him to realise his potential. As a consistent attendee, Max often shares his opinion and enjoys learning about performance. At times, Max’s behaviour can shift and his enthusiasm results in him being disruptive to the task at hand. To ensure that all members of CRYT are enjoying themselves, we continue to find ways to maintain concentration. Our facilitators ensure that we deliver sessions that include activities to improve focus and recognise that giving Max responsibility helps to channel his ability. The regularity of these activities has helped Max focus and throw himself into acting and making theatre. He has made many friends at CRYT, even inviting school friends along to join which is a brilliant sign that Max enjoys his time with us. For our end of year show, our facilitators worked with the young people to research, develop and devise an engaging showcase exploring ‘County lines’, drugs and gang related crime. Max approached this topic with maturity and often suggested creative and insightful ways to look at this topic in performance. Leading up to the final showcase, he consistently attended every week and performed with integrity. Although he faced challenges, he was open to learning about himself and how he could improve on his performance. Over the course of knowing Max, we have witnessed him experience difficulty with his parents. It has become apparent that he does not seem to have space at home to express himself and share his interests. Our facilitators have been communicating with Max regarding this, offering him support where they can and acknowledging this during sessions. On the evening of the showcase Max’s dad was unable to attend and his absence really upset Max, he found it hard to accept and as a result didn’t want to perform. On this day, our Workshop Manager reassured Max that although his family couldn’t be there, he had a whole company of young people and the Chain Reaction team supporting him. After talking with one of the team and taking time to compose himself, Max decided he would like to perform. He delivered a fantastic and professional performance and worked with others exceptionally well. Gaining a better understanding of Max’s needs has allowed Chain Reaction to provide a space for him to express himself, make friends and reach his potential. Max has become a confident, open-minded and committed individual and this reflects in his performance. With continued support from CRYT, we believe that Max will continue to develop, and have somewhere he can creatively engage and flourish.</image:caption>

<image:title>Case Study - Chain Reaction Youth Theatre - Case Study | Aliyah, 13</image:title>
<image:caption>When Aliyah joined CRYT she was an outspoken character who would often arrive late, as she had been in trouble at school and put in detention. It became apparent that Aliyah was disliked at school by a number of people, for her bad behaviour and disruptive attitude. Our team quickly noticed that Aliyah lacked in confidence, which seemed to be the root cause of her problems. During group activities, Aliyah would be disruptive and not want to engage positively with her peers. She would laugh at other people’s performances but didn’t want to perform in front of the group herself. When she did, she found it difficult to stay focused and often came out of character.  We pride ourselves on making CRYT a safe space for all and so we needed to ensure Aliyah wasn’t upsetting other members of the group, who also have many complex needs. Our team decided to take positive action and confront Aliyah about her behaviour. Through positive praise and encouragement, our team helped Aliyah understand that she had huge potential and many positive qualities that she brought to the group. They also spoke to her about the negative behaviour traits she was displaying, the team explained that her behaviour was preventing us from being able to offer her further opportunities, and meant that she was stopping herself from being the best that she could be. Following this discussion her attitude immediately changed, it was remarkable how she took the feedback on so instantly.  The following week, Aliyah was like a different person. She was positive and supportive to other members of the group. She actively stepped away from situations that would lead her to interact in a negative way and she worked hard in group activities by offering her ideas, trying to stay in character and by getting the group to focus. She started to demonstrate real maturity that didn’t go unnoticed by other members of the group. Each week a member of the Chain Reaction team praised Aliyah for her hard work, commitment and maturity in the session, especially when we were discussing difficult issues. Her confidence has grown and she has become a real pleasure for the whole team to work with.</image:caption>

<image:title>Case Study - Chain Reaction Youth Theatre - Case Study | Daisy, 17</image:title>
<image:caption>Daisy started her journey with us at the end of our first year. She has Special Educational Needs (SEN) and spent a large part of her childhood in care, making her nervous around new people and incredibly shy. Despite being the oldest members of the group, her ability and mental age is in fact much lower than her age. Daisy was lacking in confidence, she struggled to look up from the floor in discussions and found it difficult to give any eye contact. Our facilitators realised quite quickly that Daisy was lacking vital communication skills, and as she’s reaching the age whereby she needs to progress into further education or employment this was likely to be a hindrance. During group work sessions we began to encourage Daisy to integrate with other members of the group and encouraged her to develop scenes with people that she hadn’t previously worked with. We challenged her to perform to the rest of the group, initially she was incredibly nervous and asked if she could sit out of the performance, but with support and encouragement from the group she managed to perform her scene in front of everyone. When a member of the team praised her for her efforts she admitted to feeling liberated by the experience and incredibly proud of herself. Following her new-found performance confidence, we saw a vast improvement in Daisy, she began to engage in group warm-ups, hold eye-contact during games and conversations, as well as actively choosing to partner up with new people. Daisy performed a monologue on stage for the first time ever in CRYT’s showcase, she was incredibly nervous, but the team gave her exercises to overcome her nerves. Daisy’s performance was fantastic, and she came off stage prouder than ever, much to the delight of the Chain Reaction team. Daisy now walks in to Youth Theatre with confidence and ease. “Every week Daisy would tell her friends and teachers about the youth theatre and the games learnt. Her social interaction with others has improved. She has showed self-confidence by even joining a club outside of school.” Teacher of Daisy, London Borough of Tower Hamlets “I have learnt how to make eye contact and how to face and speak to the audience. I have learnt how to project my voice and speak with confidence.” Daisy, Chain Reaction Youth Theatre, London Borough of Tower Hamlets</image:caption>

<image:title>Case Study - Chain Reaction Youth Theatre - Case Study | Daniel, 13</image:title>
<image:caption>Daniel is one of our longest standing Youth Theatre members, starting CRYT back in 2016. When we first met Daniel, he was an energetic child with dyslexia and autism; however, he often used his energy in disorderly ways, which would distract other young people. Daniel was always willing to contribute to discussions and perform in drama activities but he struggled to focus on any one task, which was disruptive to the group dynamic. He struggled within school and the methods they were using to try and make him focus were suppressing his energy entirely, as a result he would arrive at CRYT agitated with little control over his behaviour. We saw real potential in Daniel, but we realised he needed support in channeling his energy to become less disruptive and more disciplined. Our facilitators played focus games during the sessions that allowed Daniel to enter a controlled and calm space, which helped alleviate the excess energy he’d been struggling to control post-school. The team allowed Daniel to participate in group discussions but encouraged him to wait his turn or put his hand up rather than speaking over people. In time he became an excellent team player. As and when the team noticed his attention slip and his behaviour deteriorate our team used the ‘Neutral Pose’ (a calm and neutral standing position) to help Daniel develop self-awareness of his physical state which in turn helped his mental state. We found ways to help Daniel change his energy and use it in positive ways. Daniel is now a vital and focused member of the group and he barely misses a session. He’s learnt how to concentrate during workshops and his input in discussions is valued and respected by his peers. He has formed incredibly strong friendships through CRYT and always brings his infectious energy into each session, making sure no workshop is ever lacking in liveliness. His performance in CRYT’s last show We are Unique saw him tackling issues much greater than his years on stage and his focus throughout was commendable. Both family and teachers have commented on the outstanding changes in his behaviour and his ability to focus and implement self-discipline through techniques learnt at CRYT.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Case Study - Girls Support Girls - Case Study | Sarah, 15</image:title>
<image:caption>Sarah was referred to us from Langdon Park School as a result of her low self-esteem and lack of confidence. Throughout the workshop programme, we saw Sarah go from trying to dominate a room, in a way that was often disruptive and distracting to the other girls, to her contributing to discussions in a thoughtful and insightful way. Through ongoing mentoring after the initial GSG workshops, the one-to-one sessions have given Sarah a constant source of engagement through which she has built trust with our mentor helping her feel supported enough to confide in us regarding bullying, sexuality, and friendships. This has subsequently led to Sarah obtaining support from her school regarding bullying, and also provided a space whereby she is able to talk about her fears and apprehensions in a space that is safe and free from judgement.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Case Study - Girls Support Girls - Case Study | Priti, 14</image:title>
<image:caption>On the first day of the three-day Girls Support Girls project Priti was reserved and painfully quiet. She was unable to maintain eye contact for any amount of time or even look up from the floor when speaking to anyone, including her peers. Priti struggled with all of the activities that included addressing the group and introducing herself, and in any form of group work or discussion Priti often remained silent. When it came to socialising Priti would often opt to sit alone, and wanted to spend time on her phone, rather than engaging. After our first debrief of the day, our facilitation team decided that the best way in which to support Priti was to pair her with a facilitator who would work closely with her throughout the project. In order to inspire confidence but at the same time, be mindful of Priti’s reservations, we endeavoured to create a space within the project where Priti was able to grow in confidence through positive feedback and encouragement, on a one-to-one basis. In any form of group work, our team made sure to pair Priti with the facilitator that she had developed a bond with. Soon, we were able to see a huge change in Priti’s demeanour, not only with the team but with her peers. In being able to hold conversations and receive positive affirmations from one of the facilitators, Priti was able to find the confidence to address and befriend her peers.By the last day, Priti left the project on her way to the park with the other young women and had already exchanged numbers with all of the girls in the project.</image:caption>

<image:title>Case Study - Girls Support Girls - Case Study | Emma, aged 13</image:title>
<image:caption>Emma immediately struck us as withdrawn and shy. Initially, she was reluctant to contribute to group discussions and even chose to remove herself from an activity. Having acknowledged that Emma was feeling uncomfortable, a facilitator reassured her that she could take some time out whenever she needed to. By listening and showing empathy, the facilitator substantiated that Emma was in a supportive environment and her participation was valued. Only a short time later, she independently chose to rejoin the group for a new activity and as the workshop progressed, she became more and more engaged, finding her voice in conversations and offering her opinions voluntarily. By the end of the day, Emma evidently felt more confident and made some constructive and informed contributions. Each student filled out an evaluation form at the end of the day and Emma stated that she had enjoyed the programme and had a greater understanding of mental health issues, the risks of unsafe sex, negative relationships and local services. She also confirmed that she now felt it was important to talk to someone you trust about your feelings. This was proven when she approached a facilitator at the end of the session, to disclose that she had been self-harming and was at a loss as to what to do to aid her recovery. She was offered some techniques for her to practice and was advised that Chain Reaction would raise it with the school so they could enhance the support they currently offer her. Having reported the disclosure to the Safeguarding Lead at her school, they are now providing Emma with further support. Additionally, she sought out the Safeguarding staff to pass on her thanks to the facilitator she spoke to at Chain Reaction and for sharing it with the school.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Case Study - A4G - Case Study | Daniel, 11</image:title>
<image:caption>Unfortunately, many of the young people we engage have extremely turbulent home lives which lack consistency. As such our weekly sessions become a regular reliable resource for many young people. An example of how invaluable this regular contact is for participants can be seen through our work with Daniel who joined us when he was 11 years old. Daniel has ADHD which impacts his ability to concentrate and learn, he often gets in trouble at school and finds himself isolated. This isolation had led to him being painfully shy and only able to communicate through his older siblings. Daniel’s home life was not helping this situation as the family were experiencing severe housing issues, often moving from sofa to sofa and with very little money and no routine. We spent time working with Daniel to help build his communication skills; gradually his speech improved, he could hold eye contact and he was able to focus throughout activities. As a result of this, his confidence has grown and he is now communicating well with us and his peers. A4G has given Daniel a constant source of engagement through which he has built trust with our team and his peers, helping him feel supported enough to push himself in the right direction. Our team have also worked with his school and social services to address Daniel’s home life and while that is an on-going struggle, Daniel is now a confident and active young boy who we continue to work with.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Case Study - A4G - Case Study | Janelle, 17</image:title>
<image:caption>Janelle joined our weekly social action group Action4Gascoigne (A4G) in 2015 when she was just 15 years old. Janelle was extremely withdrawn from everyone in the group, including the facilitators. She didn’t enjoy school, was constantly in trouble for her behaviour and was extremely unhappy. After working with Janelle for a few months we started to develop a good relationship which clearly made her feel at ease and helped her to open up to us about problems she was facing at home. Janelle lived with her Mum and her younger siblings in a two bedroom flat on the nearby Estate. Her Mum had a serious gambling problem which often led to her neglect. Janelle was frequently left alone looking after and caring for her younger siblings which was extremely challenging for her at 15 years of age. Janelle also had an extremely bad skin condition that wasn’t under control which she needed help and guidance with as not only was this affecting her physically but also mentally. It transpired over time that Janelle’s Mum was often abusive towards the children which forced Janelle to fall out with her as a way of protecting them – this created even more division at home making Janelle feel isolated and alone. Janelle worked with us over the next 3 years and based on her level of need, we mentored her to help with the issues she was facing. We attended hospital appointments with her and helped her to secure a college placement allowing her to re-sit her GCSE’s. Janelle was kicked out of her home by her Mum so we helped her to then secure supported living accommodation at a local hostel and we always created a safe place she could come to if she needed help or guidance. Janelle also disclosed a very serious assault on her that we supported her with Police interviews and ensured Janelle felt safe whilst the investigation was running. Once Janelle was too old to attend A4G anymore we invited her on to our Youth Volunteer Programme and created a volunteer post for her in our office, to continue providing her with mentoring and positive work experiences. Janelle was thrilled with this opportunity as it gave her a sense of purpose, we really saw some positive changes in Janelle as a result of this. As part of her volunteering post we also asked her to start to peer mentor young attendees on the A4G programme. She came to work smartly dressed, clearly having made an effort for the day ahead. Janelle became a much more positive person to be around, we would often ask Janelle to work with other young people during the A4G sessions as part of her peer mentor role and she would always get the best out of them. Janelle is now a confident young woman, who always strives to do her best in every situation. Its thanks to fantastic regular running projects like A4G that help us to build these transformational relationships and help so many in need and at risk young people.</image:caption>
