A brand new celebrational project which inspires young people and motivates them towards a positive future
What do I want to achieve in my life? What possibilities are out there for me? How can I achieve the things I want?
“MOVIN’ ON UP” is an inspirational new project from Chain Reaction which includes a 35 minute theatre piece, an hour long workshop session and a teacher’s resource pack. The show helps 11-14 year olds (key stage 3) to realise the breadth of possibility in their lives, articulate their personal aspirations, and develop skills to achieve their dreams, and will launch and tour in October 2007.
The show is specifically aimed at years 8 & 9, to provide guidance, ideas and information prior to taking their options, and works directly in line with the 2003 government’s Department for Education and Skills’ paper on “Careers Education and Guidance in England”, which states:
“Young people who have received an effective careers education programme delivered through the curriculum, alongside impartial advice and guidance from external guidance specialists, make the best transitions at age 16 and are less likely to switch of drop out of courses in Year 12" 14-19: Extending Opportunities and Raising Standards DfES 2002
The project encourages young people to ask themselves questions, by inspiring them to think about their strengths and their future plans, and helping them realise that they have something positive to contribute to society. It provides realistic expectations of the world of work and further education, and raises self esteem and confidence in young people by opening up new horizons and providing practical steps to helping them achieve their aspirations.
The central themes of the project are personal development, social development, goal setting and making a positive contribution. “MOVIN’ ON UP” directly links with the Citizenship Curriculum by signposting local services (working closely with Connexions), encouraging young people to access careers education and guidance (CEG), and promoting the idea of further education and broadening horizons, whilst also addressing key issues that will affect their future including behaviour, attendance, motivation, time keeping, personal finance and communication skills. These issues all underpin decisions and education regarding a range of other current ‘youth issues’ including teenage pregnancy, drugs, substance misuse and more, as many of the ‘bad’ decisions made by young people are fuelled by low self-esteem, ill-education, and perceived lack of prospects.
Currently, high numbers of young people are not in education, training or employment (NEET), and teachers are concerned that young people are disengaging, and that many of them haven’t thought about the future, college or a career. “MOVIN’ ON UP” empowers young people to think about their future in a positive light, to make them aware of and excited by the many options available to them when they leave school, and to encourage them to take responsibility for their own actions whilst having the self-belief and knowledge to make informed decisions.
The show also addresses elements of the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) curriculum introduced by the DfES – aspects addressed include self-awareness, managing feelings, motivation, empathy and social skills.
Chain Reaction’s work promotes confidence, self-esteem and informed choice by providing entertaining, accessible and dynamic theatre pieces packed with factual information. Our unique style uses a mixture of story, sketches, music and parody to ensure that our important messages land with maximum impact on our audiences.
"Movin' On Up" has been developed with the support of Connexions
Each 35 minute performance will be followed by an hour long workshop session, to explore and discuss the themes of the show and help young people develop essential life skills empowering them to put their ideas and aspirations into action. There is also an accompanying Resource Pack for teachers that includes activities that can take place in preparation for the project, ideas to extend the learning potential of Chain Reaction’s visit, and information about where to go for further help.
